With the increase on the number of kids getting on to the Internet, parents should be responsible to teach and protect them from the Internet danger if it's being misused.
With the recent cases of illegal downloader case of this 9 yrs old kid, there's much more areas that parents should be wary of before things happen. Such as kids interacting with strangers in chatroom, leading leaking of information of themselves, strangers asking them out...etc. Therefore, parents played a very important role in giving them a positive education on Internet.
There's ways to protect your kids, here's some tips to share:
- Positive Education
Educate your kids on the advantages and pitfalls of the cyber world. Explain and code them examples of the consequences of risky online behavior and the precautions to be taken when interacting with others online.
- Point him to the right direction
Recommend your kids websites and search engines that are safe for them. Such as www.yahooligans.com, www.cybersmartkids.com.au, kids.msn.com, mykidzspot.blogspot.com....etc.
- Personal Information & chatroom checks
Explain to your kids in the danger of releasing their personal information in the chatrooms/blog. Monitor their activities closely, especially their conversations in chatrooms, discussion groups..etc. You can encourage them to have their own "buddy list" to limit their contacts with strangers.
- Be in Control
Keep all online accounts, passwords, including email accounts, in your name. And warn them the danger of opening email attachment from strangers .
